Cambridge Library

Rotating book-stack bollards bring a sculptural idea into the everyday life of the library forecourt.

Case study / 02

The project

Working alongside sculptor Harry Gray, AATi Foundry helped produce a memorable set of stacked books in Gunmetal, now situated in front of Cambridge University Library, remodelled in 2006.

After casting the book stacks to the sculptor’s requirements, the foundry designed and fabricated an intricate bearing system that allows parts of the heavy stacks to rotate. The team’s casting and engineering work extended beyond a conventional foundry brief to deliver a finished, working product.

Project details are based on the published case record. The hero artwork is illustrative; original project photographs, where available, appear below.
