Lynton & Barnstaple Railway

Original brass fittings help bring historic narrow-gauge carriages back to life.

Case study / 15

The project

The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway in Devon opened in 1898 and closed in 1935. The Railway Trust has reopened a mile of the line and has applied for planning permission to reopen a further 4.5 miles.

Alongside E.A.S.T Restoration, the Trust has been rebuilding historic wooden carriages. Salvaged original brass fittings were used as patterns to reproduce the fittings needed for restored carriages. The source notes work on carriages 7, 11, 16, a further carriage 17 built by the railway in 1911, and work then underway on No. 5.

Project details are based on the published case record. The hero artwork is illustrative; original project photographs, where available, appear below.
